Out of Their Element – Indigenous (2014)

Indigenous is a fun film, one that will ultimately entertain you if you need a little action and a little horror to occupy your time, just do not go and expect anything very original with it. The premise of the film finds a group of tourists becoming lost in the jungle and being hunted by strange creatures, in this case some chupacabras. This particular scenario has been played out many times before from Predator to Anaconda to any one of a couple dozen films. indigenous 3What the movie lacks in originality though, it does make up for in production values and thus, while you may find it a little overly familiar, it turned out to be a good time nonetheless.

The most interesting aspect of the entire thing is that the makes of the film decided to go with an already established creature, namely the chupacabra. By doing so, they saved themselves the headache of creating something new and having to explain it all, taking time away from the story they are trying to tell. Some might find it lazy, but by doing so, they also managed to weave in local superstition of the area and tap into the already built in fear that the creatures produce. To that effect, though their appearance varies depending on what area of the North/South American continent where they happen to have been sighted, the ones in this film are quite repulsive, a sort of strange albino man/creature hybrid. indigenous 4To that end, the special effects turned out to be quite good for this modern day B feature, delivering on the promised scares that the film was leading up to.

The acting was all right, the cast including actors and actresses you more than likely have never heard of. There was not a lot asked from them nor was there very much characterization present, just enough to get you to slightly feel for them before they were slaughtered. The bulk of the film only needed them to scream and cry and while that does take a little talent, Shakespeare it was not. For all this film was lacking in certain departments though, it more than made up for it in others and the film ultimately entertained which is most important. So if all you want to see is some good, old-fashioned horror in the form of a bunch of college kids getting chased and killed off by some fearsome monsters, this film is exactly what you are looking for because aside from that, there was little else and with a film like this, you would not have it any other way.
