Saturday Soundtracks – Funny Face

1957 saw the release of Funny Face, a motion picture starring Fred Astaire, Audrey Hepburn and Kay Thompson among others. While the film itself was utterly delightful and was sure to be whether it was a straight comedy or drama, the fact that it turned out to be a musical made it even better. Featuring songs by George and Ira Gershwin with additional music by composer and conductor Roger Edens and sung by all the major players of the film, it is a truly wonderful listen, full of charm and wit. Hepburn sang all her own songs unlike other films in her career and she has a lovely voice for those that might have thought otherwise. Astaire is as fantastic as always and Thompson is as big and brash as her character is in the movie. Funny Face is another example where the movie and the music go hand in hand, complementing each other perfectly while telling a cohesive story. A truly delightful soundtrack.
