If Only this Film Had Remained in the… – House of the Black Death (1965)

Where to start with this atrocious waste of time?  The beginning probably, as it is as good a place as any.  The film starts out with a three and a half monologue that literally seems to go on forever.  You pretty much want to stop the movie there as it just never ends, but that is not even the worst of it.  What follows is a ritual where a buxom young lass gets indoctrinated to Satan.  You would think it would be easy trying to convert someone to Satan and yet, the oath they make her recite is the longest the world has ever known – like ten presidential speeches long (maybe nine).  All of this is only in the first ten minutes of the film and it is brutally absurd.  There is also another sequence where a different buxom young lass, portrayed by actress Sabrina, dances a dance of seduction, or something, for Belial, the leader of his coven.  After all of that is a lot of talking, a disagreement between brothers, talk of werewolves and more for nearly another entire hour.

So, with the script being fairly terrible, what could have made this movie better?  Editing would have been nice, as well as some direction despite being credited with two directors, namely Harold Daniels and Jerry Warren.  The film goes from scene to scene with extreme abruptness, the score of the movie cutting in and out with just as much disappointment as the camera-work.  The special effects are simply atrocious and would even make Roger Corman cry in shame.  The werewolf in the film looked more like an ape from Planet of the Apes, had it been made by a child with Silly Putty.  Just astonishingly bad.  The movie even goes by three other names (Night of the Beast, Blood of the Man Devil and Blood of the Man Beast), just to trick you into seeing it again if you are not careful!

The only thing that saves this film from being a total failure are Lon Chaney Jr. and John Carradine who have the ability to make even the crappiest material palatable.  And while the script was garbage, the basic story and premise of the film was actually okay.  All it lacked was execution.  So unless you are a fan of the two aforementioned actors, and true horror fans should be, there is absolutely no reason to watch this movie.  Ever.
