He might have had his troubles, and really, who does not have their own kind of troule, but James Brown had soul, he had rhythm and he had the funk.  The man could hold his own with the best in the business and often stole the show not simply because of theatrics, but because the man commanded attention.  You liked watching James Brown, you wanted to watch James Brown and once you started, you found you could not turn away.  The man was a legend and still is and none can dispute his contribution to the music industry and popular culture.  There is no one quite like James Brown and it is doubtful there ever will be again.  Check out some of these shows on the Godfather of Soul and discover for yourself what made the man so special.
