The book starts off perfectly with the recap page stating ‘Previously in The Great Society.’  Introduced in the last issue, they are an alternate team of Avengers based on Avenger/JLA prototypes who have so far, been successful in stopping incursions to their Earth.  This book finds our team, Boundless, Dr. Spectrum, Sun God, The Rider, The Jovian and the Norn, fighting off multiple incursions and Mapmakers to boot, all while being watched by Namor and T’Challa.  There have been many great concepts introduced in this book by series writer Jonathan Hickman, but the one that has been the most fun so far has been the Great Society.  Seeing alternate takes of our heroes, some altogether different, has been interesting to say the least.  They may not be as smart as the Illuminati, but they have strength and heart and they have been able to hold back incursions, which makes them of particular interest to the heroes in the 616 universe.  It was great to see T’Challa and Namor talk and share a drink.  After all the enmity that has been going on between them and their peoples in previous issues, seeing them laugh together was a nice bit to remind everyone that they were not always enemies.  Morales does another fantastic job on pencils and it would be nice to see him on the book permanently, though a Great Society title would still be preferable.  Great stuff all around.

Avengers #28

Writer – Jonathan Hickman
Artist – Salvador Larroca
Colours – Frank Martin with Andres Mossa

Bruce Banner decides to have a talk with Tony Stark because he knows something is going on that Tony is not saying.  But Tony knows that the Bruce he is talking to is not the Bruce he knows.  This Bruce is one who is aware of Tony’s scheming and is all too familiar with it and Tony realizes that telling him everything he knows about what is happening to the Earth, namely the incursions, is a foregone conclusion.  The conversation is a great character study of not only this new and confident Bruce, but Tony as well.  The way they go back and forth across the conference room table is almost like a game of cat and mouse though the cat in this instance is a gamma irradiated monster.  The end result, after the air has been cleared ties directly into the last scene of New Avengers #17.  It was a great little bit that ties the two titles together and continues to prove that Hickman has a plan and is taking us along for the ride.  The second epilogue of the book chronicles the journey of the adaptoids that were introduced previously, and their final fate which is also a tie-in to the aforementioned New Avengers title.  Twists and turns from Hickman and company make this a book compelling and exciting enough to return to, month in and month out.
