In a story entitled The City that Died Twice, disaster strikes the abode of the Deviants courtesy of Jack Kirby and the Celestials. It is Eson of the Fourth Host that comes to them, not to cause harm though it might happen, but to explore the ocean depths which is his charge for the next fifty years as the Celestials seek to pass judgement. The Deviants do not see it that way though and as calamity strikes, they seek to hit back with everything they have – all for naught. In the midst of this, the visiting Thena is asked for asylum by the fallen Karkas who yet lives and by the Reject who has known nothing but battle and hate throughout his entire existence. Thena of course, acquiesces and the three of them leave; Kro, the Deviants and the rebuilt city upon the ruins of Lemuria left to their fate. It is an action-packed tale that Kirby delivers and he never fails to make it exciting as each page is a wonder to pour over. Additionally, there is a good dash of drama to give things a healthy dose of import and it is good to see Karkas still among the living as he was probably the most interesting character to appear in the title thus far. The creature seems far too intelligent and emotional to remain a footnote and hopefully, his role expands just a little as the book moves forward. Additionally, Kirby brings the reader a scene featuring Zuras, leader of the Eternals as he attempts to discover what he can of the ship that is in orbit above the Earth. It is as he feared though and as Kirby reveals this newest piece of the puzzle, one can only assume that he plans on using it sooner rather than later. With at least three different plot threads going on at the moment, it is good to see Kirby keeping them all sorted while still moving them forward as well. The current story does leave things up in the air for Kro as his city floods around him, but at least for the moment as far as the Eternals and humanity at large are concerned, other than the Celestials, things are quiet for the moment.
