There were two plotlines running this issue and though very little happened between the two, the book was a lot of fun as they balanced each other nicely.  One has to do with a masked man named Midnight who is on the run from the Nazis, bearing a strange package but one of great importance.  The second and main plot features a gathering of the All-Star Squadron, and not just the original team, but the members from every team as they now all fall under the one unifying banner of the Squadron.  The Justice Society, The Seven Soldiers of Victory, as well as all sorts of various heroes have shown up for the meeting.  Besides a roll-call, not much gets accomplished before Uncle Sam busts in, the legendary figurehead of America.  As stated, Roy Thomas made this quite the fun issue simply because it is amazing to see so many heroes in one place and the fact that it does not happen so often, even in this day and age makes it all the better.  What makes it even more special is that they are all together as friends without their being a crisis looming, at least not when they first convened.  This issue is also extra-special as it is the first appearance of the Freedom Fighters, sort of.  They do not actually get together this issue, but all of the members are there and they all answer the call to arms when Uncle Sam speaks.  One thing that you can praise DC for, and Roy Thomas as well, is the great proliferation of heroes, and ones that are sometimes so much more interesting than those that headline their own books like Batman or Superman.  Definitely one of the best issues in quite some time.
